Kokkinos Pyrgos is located in the southern part of the Heraklion Regional Unit, very close to Tympaki.

It is a seaside settlement that is washed by the South Cretan Sea and has seen development in recent decades, becoming a popular summer resort primarily for residents of nearby areas as well as for tourists.

The beach that embraces the settlement is vast, sandy, with convenient depths for children, and clean, although crowded during the summer months.

Above the coast, there are cafes, taverns, rental rooms, and hotels that serve the hundreds of bathers who choose Kokkino Pyrgos beach for their swim.

Most of the beach is organized with sunbeds, umbrellas, and a lifeguard, while there is also ample free space for those who prefer to bring their own equipment.

Right across from the beach, you can see the Paximadia islets, and in some spots on the sand, there are fenced areas set up for the nesting of the Caretta Caretta turtle, which chooses this warm location to bring its young into the world.

It’s worth noting that Kokkino Pyrgos beach is divided into two sections.

The eastern section, from the small harbor to the airport, is called Katalyki, while the stretch from the northwest of the harbor up to Agia Galini is known as the large Makrymaliana beach, also called Kakoskalo.
